  • 1.  Call for Submissions for Year 2 Building Envelope Campaign (BEC) awards through April 22!

Building Envelope Campaign is a program designed to help building owners and managers create more energy efficient buildings. This will be achieved by targeting the building envelope thermal performance, determining available energy savings, and providing technical support. This program is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its Organizing Partners, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), and the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants.

They are accepting submissions for our Year 2 BEC awards through April 22. Submit your new construction or retrofit, commercial or multifamily residential building completed since January 2019 and tell us how you've improved its envelope performance and energy efficiency.

Congratulations on this new program! I have long advocated for a Building Enclosure Design Award. In fact, for one year, BEC Boston had such program. In 2007, the award went to Perry Dean Rogers | Partners for Harvard University's 60 Oxford Street project.

Words and definitions matter. The terms "Building Envelope" and "Building Enclosure" are often used interchangeably in publications. It would be preferable if the A/E community agreed upon a best term and definition for this. I think that the term Building Enclosure is a better description of the elements defining the exterior features of buildings and a preferable word choice for the A/E community to use.

I agree with you, Richard Koziol. Building Enclosure is a better description. I will start the conversation to adopt Building Enclosure at Hoffmann Architects.

    Richard Koziol,

I could not agree more that words and definitions matter!

To address that topic, the AIA Building Performance Knowledge Community has an ongoing Definitions project, and the first phase has been posted here:
    https://www.aia.org/pages/6314361-definitions-for-building-performance?utm_source=real-magnet&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=kc20-dynamic-9-november

Under "general terms", we have defined building enclosure as a preferred term, based on extensive review of the literature.  All are welcome to send comments, using the email address provided under Feedback near the bottom of the web-page.

(I apologize that this post is slightly off-topic, but the BPKC is looking for ways to increase AIA members' awareness of the Definitions project.)

I agree with my colleague Rich Koziol that words and definitions matter. Approximately 3 years ago when IIBEC rebranded there was considerable debate about the words since IIBEC members do consulting work on all 6 sides of the building. In the end the association rebranded to the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants. If there is anything that IIBEC could do to assist and/or partner with the AIA I know both associations would benefit.
