Towards the end of 2018, Cory Brugger (CTO & Principal, HKS, and part of the TAP leadership group at the time) and I had lunch at ABX, a regional architecture conference hosted by the Boston Society of Architects. The lunch, as I found out later, was more than a social engagement, it was partially an interview. He was searching for folks to help lead the AIA's Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Community, also known as TAP.
Before, during and after that conference, I've been sounding the alarm that our industry is at a technological crossroads. The convergence of advanced software applications, democratization of cutting edge fabrication technology, and near limitless computing power is disrupting our industry and others. However, the AEC machine is stubbornly resistant to change, to our collective detriment. Put simply, we must adapt, or will be left behind.
TAP serves as a leading voice in helping raise awareness of current and emerging technologies, and how architects can embrace them into their work. We do this through a variety of outreach vehicles, such as Building Connections Congress, Innovations Awards, and conference presentations, to name a few. Like all Knowledge Communities, TAP is grassroots supported -- truly for the members, by the members.
I'm so happy that Cory introduced me to TAP, where I could lend my voice to support the AIA's mission, fellow practitioners, and promote lasting change that will help so many. Will you lend yours?
