Who we are

The AIA Project Delivery Knowledge Community (PD) promotes the architect’s leadership role in all project delivery methods by assembling and distributing knowledge and best practices for a variety of project delivery methods, e.g. design-build (DB), integrated project deliveries (IPD), and public-private partnerships (P3).

With all of the current conversation around the infrastructure bill, economic recovery, and renewed attention to Federal projects in the coming years, I've been engaged in a lot of conversations with other architects and construction industry professionals lately around minimizing gaps in time and budget in Federal projects while still delivering innovative, effective facilities.  DBIA is hosting an event on Federal Design Build-full disclosure that I'm speaking (pro bono) at this event-but I'd love to hear from other architects across the nation how you've been addressing these perennial challenges.

What strategies is your firm trying for the first time-or continually returning to-in order to match high-performance with cost- and schedule-efficiencies? Is Design-Build part of that strategy-or is there another project delivery method that you prefer to rely on?  Do you work with owners to select a delivery method, and if so, what decision tools do you use?

In my former role as the US General Services Administration's Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Project Delivery, we found that collaborative delivery methods were highly correlated to successful project outcomes, and Design-Build is one such method.

    Laura,

In working with owners to select a project delivery method, cost and schedule are often identified as primary decision criteria during risk assessment.  To mitigate these risks, Design-Build delivery gains momentum.  In return, clients expect a development that is more reliable in terms of project duration and cost.

As the former US GSA's Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Project Delivery, your insights are invaluable to the industry.  The DBIA 2021 Federal Forum is something to look forward to.

    Laura,
Hope to attend the DBIA forum - the Corps is being challenged to consider alternate delivery systems by the growing number and variety of stakeholders and programs.  We still have approximately a $60 billion workload - and that's without what may come out of the infrastructure bill(s) winding around the White House and Congress. Hope retirement is treating you well - something I may try out soon.
    Best, Ed
