Who we are

The Young Architects Forum (YAF), a program of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the College of Fellows (COF), is organized to address issues of particular importance to recently licensed architects.

FAQ: What is a young architect and what is an emerging professional? Young architects are architects licensed up to ten years of initial licensure, and the name does not have any relationship to age. Emerging professionals are professionals who have completed their academic studies up to the point of licensure or up to 10 years after completion of their academic studies. Although young architects are now defined as distinct from emerging professionals, many components refer to these groups similarly. For example, a local YAF group may include emerging professionals and a local Emerging Professionals Committee may include young architects.

GROUP 7 OF THE AIA CULTURE COLLECTIVE continues to dig into the possibility of a stronger value proposition for the AIA and the profession. In the next weeks, we will post comments from our correspondents that you may find thought provoking. If so, please reply -- with gusto!! "Do you go to a doctor because of value? Do you use an attorney because of value? No. Professional advice is used because we need it. There is no other reasonable choice. All of AIA efforts should be going towards the day when any construction requiring a building permit cannot be performed without an architect." Mark Robin AIA Mark Robin Architecture Nashville TN "Trying to convince the world that an Architect license means someone is a great designer will fall on deaf ears, mine included, some of the best designers I know are not licensed Architects. The AIA needs to push municipalities to require the Architects have Professional liability insurance (just like the Plumbers, Electricians, General Contractors)."
