Who we are

The AIA Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Community (TAP) serves as a resource for AIA members, the profession, and the public in the deployment of computer technology in the practice of architecture. TAP leaders monitor the development of computer technology and its impact on architecture practice and the entire building life cycle, including design, construction, facility management, and retirement or reuse.

    What is the future of project delivery methods and how does technology affect that process?

    Please join us for a deep discussion on the latest trends in project delivery at the 2019 Project Delivery Symposium: Delivering the Future on March 11-12 at AIA National in Washington, DC.

    The increasing demand for successful project outcomes continues to drive the design and construction industry toward innovations in project delivery. Recent strategies such as Progressive Design Build and Integrated Project Delivery are rapidly evolving, and coupled with the relentless advancement of digital technologies, these delivery methods are transforming the traditional relationships among owners, architects, and builders. This symposium will consider the future of project delivery and its central role in balancing these unrelenting trends. Owners, architects, engineers, constructors, will come together to offer their perspectives on the latest strategies for driving project outcomes, allocating risk, and employing software to close the gap between design, fabrication and construction.

    Hello Isabella, in Australia we have been working with a concept to completion strategy, the aim is to keep everything in a central location. Our architects are utilizing advance Sketchup Plugins at concept/design stage, so instead of pushing and pulling geometry that roughly represents the design intent we are using an Australian Made Plugin called PlusSpec where you draw inside Sketchup Pro using powerful parametric wall tools, roof floor windows etc. that interact with the design and structure. Kind of like Revit or ArchiCAD yet with the freedom of Skethcup

    The advantage of utilizing Sketchup Pro and associated plugins like PlusSpec are;
    1. Lower software cost to designers and contractors
    2. Faster draw time, delivery and iteration
    3. The design is more mature from the get-go and this initiates Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) discussion and alteration from vested parties.
    4. Client communication and interaction in 3D
    5. As the model is now technically a BIM, it can be utilized for feasibility, initial costing, and purchasing of locally available materials
    6. authority communication
    All of the above play a big part in delivering better outcomes from design, through construction to handover, it is a huge time saver and reduces wastage, not on in paper but more importantly time to draft and communicate.
    I am aware of many companies State Side who are delivering projects in this method; I am sure they may be of assistance in your conference. I'd like to attend, however, the date of the even does not work with my schedule. If you need some contact info on SU based users, please feel free to reach out.
    Kind Regards Andrew Dwight
