Welcome to 2015!

  • 1.  Welcome to 2015!

    Posted 01-08-2015 08:38 AM
    Happy New Year to all!
As your 2015 chair for the Public Architects Knowledge Community, I wish to welcome everyone to a new year and new actions to improve our community.  Some quick bullets:
    1.  We re-aligned the 2014 Public Architects Workshop to two half-day sessions to open our world to the larger AIA community.  Anecdotal comments as well as session ratings were extremely high and very positive.
    2.  With the lead of the DC Chapter, a measure was passed at the 2014 Business Meeting to investigate creating a Public Agency category of membership, allowing public agencies to purchase a number of AIA memberships for their professional staff.
    3.  The 2015 Public Architects Workshop, led by David Trevino, AIA, will feature session leads from the Corporate Architects and Facilities Management KC and the Academy of Architecture for Justice KC.  Main focus of both sessions will be the use of technology in public sector practice.
    4.  Paula Loomis, FAIA, and I will be working with the 2015 AIA President, Elizabeth Chu Richter, FAIA, on several initiatives this coming year, including the current limitation on design fees for public work and design-build procurement.
I wish to invite all of you to participate in discussing these and other thoughts you have on the state of the profession of public architecture.  I hope to use this and other forums to open the discussion.
    Best wishes, Ed

    Michael,
Thanks for the vote of confidence!  Last year was the first year we tried the new format - had over 60 attendees for each session, with ratings over 8.8 for the morning session and over 8.9 for the afternoon session!  Hope to see you at Convention!

In the recent past, Chicago and Denver, the Public Architects Workshop has been held at the same location as the comvention the wednesday  before the convention. We anticipate the same this year.
As chair of the Public Architects Workshop, our committe invites all to register and attend our workshop for a most infomative workshop with presenations that will cover a complete cycle of design excellence integrating BIM, CMMS and FM. Presentations will include technology reseach from universities, to companies developing new applications to architects incorporating all. Hope to see you there.

    GREETINGS
Have you ever wanted to have a discussion with architects about how they can better meet your needs? Now is your chance to do that! In its quest to be more responsive to member needs, the AIA is looking to host a panel of Owners to talk about what they expect from architects. The goal is to assemble a diverse panel including a Higher Education owner, a Federal Government owner, a Municipal Government owner, a Developer and perhaps somebody from the military. I am looking for somebody to lead this effort. I can help find other Owners or you can identify folks that you know. They can be different from the categories listed above, but we want diversity. The submittal deadline for convention sessions was last August, but the desire for this type of panel is great enough that the AIA is extending the deadline. Please respond to me at mpcox@vcu.edu if you are interested and I'll get you set up with the right information and the right people.
Many thanks in advance for your help !

    Hi Ed

happy and best for the new year!

Can you send more information about #2, Public Agency member ship category in AIA?  It's a specific issue that came up at the New York Chapter just last week.

I know that CMAA offers a comparable benefit that my agency offers to all professional staff. It would be a great resource for all involved.

    thanks in advance,

    Michael
