Bio

As Managing Principal of Flynn Battaglia Architects, PC since its founding in 1989, Mr. Battaglia is responsible for overall firm management and the successful integration of finance, talent management, and operations of the firm. On a project level, he leads design charrettes and is a resource available to all project teams. He is responsible for all agreements engaging the firm’s clients and consultants, and other contractual matters involving firm resources. Mr. Battaglia's design approach engages the client and user in a discovery process emphasizing opportunity, aesthetics, and responsibility.

For more than three decades of professional practice, Ronald Battaglia has served in a leadership role for a wide variety of projects utilizing his experience and knowledge in design, management, planning and project delivery. His expertise and community service orientation result in successful projects for colleges/universities, k-12 schools, historic preservation, housing, community facilities and health care. He is experienced in coordinating the activities of owners, complex architectural/engineering teams, financiers, politicians, regulatory agencies, contractors and construction managers. Mr. Battaglia applies this management expertise with his knowledge of planning and design to the practice of architecture to facilitate the building process and assure success. His projects have been recognized for design excellence, urban design, historic preservation, and waterfront revitalization through numerous national, state and local awards.

He was elevated to the College of Fellows for advancing the science and art of planning and building in 1995, he has received numerous State, regional, and national awards for design excellence, and innovative use of building materials. His writings and work have been featured in national and international periodicals as well as a number of books.

His community activities have had a broad impact both locally and nation-wide. As a staunch advocate for connecting architects with their communities, he led the AIA Board of Directors with Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris in the successful effort to create a Blueprint for America, seeing AIA’s Sesquicentennial as a unique opportunity. Under his leadership the Board reinstated the R/UDAT program and established SDATs (Sustainable Design Assistance Teams); together these have provided programs/solutions to specific urban design and community issues in more than 25 cities across the country. As AIA Vice-President – Community, he helped launch an extensive community outreach program called AIA150 which provided volunteer services by architects to more than 300 communities throughout the US. Additionally as Chair of AIA’s Community Committee he used his skills to organize the Committee into five action-oriented Task Groups: Communities by Design, Alliances, One-AIA, Grassroots and Public Policies to address member priorities. He served on the ExCom of AIA’s Small Firm Roundtable and contributes to the Architectural Building Index. Locally, he has received appointments to the Mayor’s Theater District Task Force and the Amherst Preservation Commission. He has engaged elected officials nationally and state-wide to enact Smart Growth and Green Design legislation and strengthen regulations regarding historic restoration and housing tax credits.

In addition to his strong interest in design, Mr. Battaglia is equally interested in the business and advancement of the profession. He has been a strong supporter for our Schools of Architecture, emerging professionals and diversifying our profession and the clients we serve. As a NAAB visiting team member 2008 - 2015 he represents the profession (AIA) participating in the accreditation process of Schools of Architecture. With equal passion he works to improve the lives of the next generations of architects through mentor programs and improvements to the internship (IDP) and licensing processes. As a member of the IDP Advisory Committee and NCARB’s IDP Committee his focus on improving entry into the profession resulted in both committees supporting his motion that removed barriers to the Architectural Registration Exam, making it available to all candidates upon graduation and enrolment in IDP. His sponsorship of Convention Resolution 04-02 “To Strengthen the Demographic Diversity of the Design Profession” and drafting of AIA’s Public Policy on Diversity frame AIA’s activities to improve diversity in our profession and in turn our relevance to society.
