Bio

Gunnar Hubbard is a recognized leader and innovator within the green building industry. With more than 25 years of experience as a green building consultant, Mr. Hubbard has played a key role on a wide variety of sustainability projects throughout the United States and abroad, including numerous commercial buildings, educational facilities, healthcare facilities, government buildings, museums, manufacturing facilities and residential buildings. He was involved in the early days of the US Green Building Council, and helped develop the LEED rating system. He has experience with green building standards and certification systems around the globe, most notably with LEED in the United States, BREEAM in the United Kingdom and Three Star Rating System in China.

As Thornton Tomasetti’s Sustainability Practice Leader, he oversees the firm’s sustainability consulting worldwide with staff in New York, Boston, San Francisco, London, and Portland (ME). His experience includes the Las Vegas CityCenter Block C, Harvard University’s Allston Science Complex, 150 Existing Building Certifications in Sweden, Boeblingen School in Stuttgart, Germany, the Shanghai International Financial Center, and Integrative Design Process consulting at Princeton University.  

As an active educator, Mr. Hubbard develops and leads green building workshops and initiatives around the world. He is one of the early LEED Fellows in the United States, and was a LEED® Faculty™ for ten years. He helped developed the popular LEEDuser on-line system to demystify the LEED rating system.  For a period of 5 years his group performed the third party reviewer role for LEED certification on projects submitted from around the world. He also held a license for 5 years to teach the U.S. Green Building Council’s curriculum to groups in the United States and abroad. He has given workshops in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Beijing, London, Dubai, Sao Paulo, Stockholm, and throughout the united states.

He has been a visiting faculty at Cornell University and has taught at Ball State University and the Yestermorrow Design/Build School. His past experience also includes work as a research scholar in Green Development Services at the Rocky Mountain Institute, where he consulted and conducted research on environmentally responsible architecture and development.

Mr. Hubbard holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Vermont and a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Oregon. He is a registered architect in California.
