Bio

A Founder and Past President of AIA Canada, currently a Technical and Policy Advisor at the National Research Council of Canada, Adam previously served as Director of Policy and Innovation at Alberta Health to lead the functions of strategic policy setting, funding, implementation, and system-level performance monitoring for primary and community services health care organizational models. A Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, a regulated member of seven professional organizations in five countries, he is the Past Chair of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (YEG, Alberta), and the Past President of the Canadian chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

As Director of Capital Assets at Alberta Seniors and Housing, Adam led technical and real estate strategic management, ensuring the quality and value of a portfolio of $7+ billion. Along with Alberta Infrastructure, as Director Facilities, Adam led the Capital Planning and Asset Assessment program of 12,000+ facilities. With the Alberta Land Use Secretariat, he facilitated the implementation of the Land Use Framework under the Alberta Land Stewardship Act. Adam completed 60+ architectural, urban design and planning projects, five municipal plans and zoning by-laws, as well as a number of policies, frameworks and guidelines, with a view to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He lived in the Canadian Arctic, where he developed a close relationship with the Inuit population and supported the construction of their municipal infrastructure.

As Vice-Chair of the Edmonton Design Committee, he provided advice on 300+ development projects with investments of over $4 billion. An expert advisor to the Metropolis International Institute, the voice of local government before the United Nations, Adam provided training courses in Environmentally Friendly Infrastructure, Management, Climate Change Adaptation and Sustainable Development for elected representatives, city managers and public officials of eight countries. A member of the board of directors of the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), he was the Climate Change Committee board liaison. In recognition of an outstanding lifetime contribution to professional planning in Canada, Adam received the CIP 2016 President’s Award.

A multilingual author, looking to the future generation, he has taught urbanism, architecture and landscape architecture during his 5-year tenured appointment with an European university.

After a six year integrated B.Arch. & M.Arch. professional Degree in Architecture accredited by RIBA, Adam received a Post-Graduate diploma in Heritage and Conservation. Subsequently, he earned a Masters in Urban Planning with a focus on community revitalization through urban design, and a Masters in Civil Engineering. To overcome the complexity of sustainably developing and managing large eco-friendly infrastructures, Adam completed a PhD Degree ‘Cum Laude’ in Urban History in a Global Context.
