Bio

Monique Lugo-López is the President and Chief Operating Officer of Alvarez-Díaz & Villalón.

Monique is a registered architect licensed to practice in Puerto Rico with over 21 years of experience in the field of architecture with a significant number of completed commercial, industrial, institutional, residential and interior design projects. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a Masters in Architecture in 1996, Monique interned in various sole practitioner architecture firms in Puerto Rico gaining ample experience in residential, institutional, commercial and hospitality design projects such as the Paradisus Coco Beach, the Modernization of a Public Housing Development and Auto Workshops for various Correctional Facilities in Puerto Rico.

In 2003, Monique decided to start her own architectural practice where she served as a consultant, project manager and/or project architect to the local architecture and engineering firms of UNIPRO, Entech DPM and Benitez Ramos and Associates, the latter in collaboration with Stantec. As sole practitioner, Monique also continued to develop a consistent list of private clients and projects including Baldwin School of Puerto Rico (Innovation Center, Elementary School Library, Elementary School Music and Art Classrooms and the Performing Arts Center); Los Angeles Memorial Park (Funeral Chapels and Funeral Home); the Superintendence of Catholic Schools of San Juan (Facilities Assessment and Improvements Program), as well as various residential and commercial client projects.

Monique has been an active member of El Colegio de Arquitectos y Arquitectos Paisajistas de Puerto Rico and has served on the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Chapter of the AIA from 2008 to 2011, where she oversaw the Continuing Education Program. In 2017, Monique joined Alvarez-Díaz & Villalón as the Design Studio Manager and Senior Project Designer and in 2018, she was appointed the firm’s new President and Chief Operating Officer.

Monique is the President of the AIA PR Chapter for 2022.
