On Monday, 1 October 2018, people everywhere will celebrate World Architecture Day 2018. Countries all around the globe will highlight the importance of architecture through events, exhibits, lectures and other activities, for the profession and the public.

The International Union of Architects (UIA), the only global organisation representing the world's 3.2 million architects, is sponsoring this poster design competition to promote World Architecture Day. The winning design will become the unifying visual identity for programmes and activities throughout the world.

World Architecture Day 2018 marks the seventieth anniversary of the founding of the UIA, which was established in 1948 to unite architects everywhere. Poster designs must stress the theme "Architecture... for a better world!" using this exact phrase. The seventieth anniversary of the UIA may be mentioned, this is not required.

Our distinguished international Jury will select the winner on the basis of clarity and power of messaging, ability to attract attention, overall artistic merit, and ease of use and reproduction.

    DEADLINES

Questions must be directed to Emily Bonin, e.bonin@uia-architectes.org with the subject line "Poster Competition" prior to Tuesday, 1 May 2018.

Submissions are due on this platform not later than midnight Paris (Central European) time Friday, 1 June 2018.

The winner will be announced on Monday, 2 July 2018. By entering, the author grants to UIA and its Member Sections the unrestricted worldwide rights to use the material entered, with proper attribution and credit to the author, but without compensation beyond the amount of any prizes awarded. The entrant warrants that he or she is the sole author of the submitted work (or in the case of a group effort, that the group is its sole author) and that he or she has full and exclusive rights to grant UIA the authority to use the work.

    JURY

The jury for the UIA Poster competition for World Architecture Day 2018 will consist of the following prominent graphic designers from around the world:

    Michael Bierut (USA), Pentagram

Michael Bierut's first job after graduating from the University of Cincinnati in 1980 was with legendary designer Massimo Vignelli, where he worked for ten years before becoming a partner in the New York office of the international design consultancy Pentagram. There his clients have included the New York Times, the American Institute of Architects, Saks Fifth Avenue, Mastercard, MIT Media Lab and Hillary Clinton.

Michael is a past president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale and the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame, and has been awarded the AIGA Medal and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award. In spring 2016, Michael was the Henry Wolf Graphic Designer in Residence at the American Academy in Rome. He teaches at the Yale School of Art and the Yale School of Management.

Michael is a co-founder of the website Design Observer and the author of 79 Short Essays on Design and How to use graphic design to sell things, explain things, make things look better, make people laugh, make people cry and (every once in a while) change the world. His latest book, Now You See It, came out last year.

    Trix Barmettler (Switzerland)

Trix Barmettler lives and works in Zurich. Before she joined the design team of the branding agency ›Martin et Karczinski Zurich‹ in November 2016, Trix Barmettler ran the Studio Trix Barmettler / Visual Concept specialized in artistic, graphic and spatial transformations.

Trix Barmettler can look back on almost 20 years of experience in the fields of design, architecture, art and photography. As graphic designer her specialty lies in the design of posters and book as well as corporate design projects.
Trix Barmettler focuses on experimental work with hand crafted materials and transforms then in an organic way – a technique which influences her entire graphic design style.

She gave lectures, taught and operated as a mentor for students at various universities of design and arts. Trix Barmettler participated in juries such as ‹The 100 Best Posters›, ‹Mut zur Wut› International Poster Competition and ‹Weltformat› Poster Competition.

She studied graphic design at the University of Design and Art in Lucerne, Switzerland.
