Description:
“Within Formal Cities” is a project by Abe Drechsler and Brian Gaudio to document housing and infrastructure projects in 5 cities in South America: Lima, Santiago, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Bogotá. This project was made possible by the Turan and Linda Duda Traveling Fellowship, which is a postgraduate award for graduating architecture students at North Carolina State University. By 2050 an estimated 1/4 of the world’s population will live in informal communities such as favelas, shanty-towns, and slums. As public interest designers, we explored the question: “How have cities in South America responded to the growth of informal communities?” We traveled throughout South America for 6 weeks in the Fall of 2014 to interview designers, residents, non-profit organizations, and government agencies about the global housing crisis and the progress cities in South America have made to resolve it. Our project aims to challenge the next generation of designers and architects to do more: to bring good design to those who need it.
