Seeking Hazard Mitigation Case Studies for Publication

AIA is seeking case studies of single family homes that embody one or more Qualities of Resilience. Qualities of Resilience describes characteristics or questions for design teams to consider in an integrated systems-approach to design.  With a performance-based approach to answering the question "What is a Resilient Building?" architects are able to prioritize the unique needs of their clients to contribute to the social, economic and environmental resilience of communities.

Case studies should exhibit innovative, hazard mitigation best practices for one or more of the following:

    • Flood (all types, including riverine and coastal)
    • Tornadoes
    • Wildfires
    • Hurricanes
    • Earthquakes

If you have a single family home you'd like to submit for consideration, please complete this brief form by January 15.

Glad to see AIA step up to assemble mitigation stories. I would urge the National Institute of Building Science (NIBS) also be consulted. As a former Chair & Board Member of NIBS I can tell you they have a huge store of information on resilience and the value of mitigation rather than recovery. They have worked with FEMA for many years to help governmental departments as well as state & local jurisdictions nitrate and prepare.

I would also add one caution. Your list of events for which you seek solutions focuses solely on natural events. At NIBS we acknowledged that manmade events also need to be mitigated in the design, construction and operation of the built environment. While they are a challenge to clearly identify they can be assessed, mitigation steps taken and preparations for recovery implemented. NIBS can assist there as well.

I look forward to see the publication.

Hi RK thanks for the insight!  Not surprised to find you have had a leadership role in this area (on top of all your other leadership including AIA).

Is there some route via which the existing trove of information is searchable by practicing architects ?

    Cheers

As with all things sustainable it is location, Location, location and a dash of common sense.

Something that is not very celebrated these days.
