I have the privilege of doing the reconstruction of a historic manor house that was originally built in 1906 but recently destroyed by fire.  In trying to find an "in-kind" product to replace the original asbestos cement roof tiles installed when the house was built, I cannot seem to find a substitute that is both similar in labor to install and that has a 100-year life span.  Slate seems to be my only option, however, the insurance company wants me to find another product.  I did use a recycled plastic & rubber product replicated to look like slate on several projects since 2001, but this product has had its issues (fading and curling) and I would not recommend using it again. Non-asbestos cement tiles can be made having the appearance of slate, but only have a service life of 50 years. Any recommendations for a 100-year product?

The only other long life span roof tile I can think of is Ludovici tile.  They have some flat clay tiles that resemble slate and shakes, and they have a 75 year warranty.  They are still in business, although the company has been sold a couple of times.
I've looked for asbestos cement substitutes, and I've ended up using slate.  Most modern concrete tile is heavier in appearance than old asbestos cement tiles, and of course whatever use should have a similar exposure to the weather.

There's not much out there except traditional materials that meet the test of time.....

There is a flat, interlocking Ludowici tile called the Williamsburg tile that looks a bit like an asbestos cement shingle.  You might look at whether that tile approaches the appearance of the old asbestos cement.

I sympathize with the cement tile or slate roof shingle issue and will be facing it soon on my own house. Sorry to hear of problems with the recycled material, was that by Majestic?

Sweets recently posted a new product from GAF called TruSlate (why they drop the e in true?). It seems to use slate for the exposed portion and another material for the rest of each shingle that is covered by the one above. Could be a clever way to save the cost of all slate material. I have never seen it used, but might be worth investigating.

    Good luck,

Why are you looking for something that is "similar in labor to install and has the same life span" to begin with?
