I have a student who is working on her capstone project for an Historic Preservation Degree. She will be completed 4 case studies based on the 4 treatments outlined the Secretary of the Interior Standards. For her project she will be interviewing the firm or organization who designed/oversaw these projects.

She is having a difficult time finding an example of a Reconstruction to use for this project. Is anyone aware of or was involved in a recent (preferably within the past 10 years) reconstruction project? And would be willing to share information and talk with this student about the project?

    Thank you

I can speak to your student about the reconstruction of an 18th century French Military Building at Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain. the interior has a quiet contemporary aesthetic, the exterior is a reconstruction of the building that was on the site until blown up by the retreating French forces in 1759.

Our architectural firm has just completed the renovation of a National Historic Registry property in Monett, MO for use by their local history museum, and we are 6 months from completing the renovation of several adjacent National Historic registry properties for our history museum complex in Springfield, MO (ultimately a $20 to $30 million project). I would be glad to visit with her. Both are great case studies of private sector use of historic tax credits ultimately for the benefit of both the community's revitalization and the not-for-profit history museums.

I believe the reconstruction of some of the historic battlefields at Gettysburg is considered a reconstruction per the Secretary's Standards.  Here's a starting point: https://www.nps.gov/gett/learn/news/gett-battlefield-rehab.htm
This was run by the Park Service, so they could weigh in on how they saw this from that standpoint.  And agree with it or not, it's a pretty fascinating project.
Good luck to your student - Kathy Dowdell

    Jonathan,

The Thomas Cole National Historic Site in Catskill, New York, has recently reconstructed a small studio building originally designed by Cole on the site of his residence, Cedar Grove. The project was well researched and executed.

A little over two years ago my firm reconstructed the steeple at St. Michael's Church, Marblehead, MA, built 1714.  The steeple had been taken down in 1793, being rotten, during the harsh economic period after the American Revolution.  The contemporary material clearly differentiated the steeple from the bell tower and church below.  The work followed National Park Service Guidelines while also meeting current building codes.  For additional information see following links: https://www.flickr.com/photos/stmichaels1714/albums/72157648337558980 - steeple raising.  Also Tower repairs - https://www.flickr.com/photos/stmichaels1714/albums/72157646367667275

Check out the reconstruction of the 1958 Johnie's Broiler, a Googie coffee shop in Downey, CA. It was almost entirely demolished illegally in 2007 and reopened in 2009 as a Bob's Big Boy. There was event at the restaurant yesterday on the 10th anniversary of the demolition. A portion of the Ambassador Hotel, the Coconut Grove wing, was also reconstructed as part of a middle/high school by the Los Angeles Unified School District.

A few years back we, with Rhodeside Harwell as landscape designers, designed the reconstruction of a good length of the stone wall along the sunken road that was central to the first and second battles of Fredericksburg, VA. It was based on meticulous data, from Matthew Brady photographs, the size of firearms shown in them, contemporary notebooks, geological analysis and archaeology and other data assembled by the National Park Service. As built, the wall and roadway represented a much argued synthesis of historical accuracy and contemporary needs, like passage for fire department vehicles, good drainage, accessibility and links to the existing visitor center and parking.

I would be delighted to provide more information if this project should interest you.

    Jonathan,

Regarding your inquiry into “reconstruction” examples, Quinn Evans Architects has had two opportunities working with Mt. Vernon to recreate buildings that once stood on the plantation during George Washington’s lifetime: The Treading Barn and Distillery. Both are part of Mt. Vernon’s ongoing commitment to present a more complete picture of Washington, in these instances as farmer and whiskey maker. The extent of historic documentation on the two structures varied significantly. The Treading Barn is as close a recreation as possible, built according to Washington's design board-for-board. The Distillery required more conjecture. If these sounds like appropriate examples for your student, I'm sure we can make arrangements for sharing more information about these spectacular reconstruction projects.

    Best regards, Carl

    Jonathan,

We were involved extensively in the recent restoration of The Gibbes Art Museum on Meeting Street in Charleston, SC. While this was a restoration it was quite a complex and interesting project in that the original drawings were uncovered in the Charleston archives and Evans and Schmidt - the architecture firm overseeing the work - used these drawings to bring the building back to her original design. This structure's evolution over the years might add an interesting element to the analysis as a comparative case study from a design standpoint.

Your student might want to contact the folks at Colonial Williamsburg, which has a lot of reconstructed buildings.  Although most of the work was done decades ago, I believe they are still doing some reconstruction work of various outbuildings.

Second the suggestion to look at Colonial Williamsburg, I returned last summer and a building was being reconstructed on Market Square.

I would like to thank everyone for their recommendations. There are many great projects ideas to consider. It is wonderful that so many people are willing to help our students. I have compiled the list of all project recommendations that I have received and forwarded the information to her. We met to review them yesterday and she will be narrowing this list down soon.

    Thank you very much!

    Hi, Jonathan!

A few years ago, we worked with the Dixboro United Methodist Church just east of Ann Arbor, MI, to reconstruct their bell tower and had only one 1915 photo to use as the basis for design. The tower had been missing for almost 100 years, and the underlying structure was terribly compromised by weather damage that had resulted in the tower's removal in the first place. Extrapolating from this photo, and referencing other comparable structures with center spires, a replica was reconstructed on the ground and lifted by crane unto the prepared structure of the tower base.

If this story intrigues your student, and if the project type meets your student's needs, then I'd be happy to assist.
