Stuart Cohen FAIA and Julie Hacker FAIA (Stuart Cohen & Julie Hacker Architects) will examine strategies for making additions to existing structures that consider determining factors for both planning and architectural vocabulary. They will use examples from their practice to illustrate their approach.
- Understand the Recent History of building additions.
- Understand Formal and Planning Strategies for adding on to an existing building.
- Understand when an addition should replicate the language of the existing building and when it can stand in contrast
- Understand the Implied Meanings conveyed by replicating and extending an existing building versus building in contrast to existing forms and materials.

Report AIA Continuing Education
Attendees will earn 1.0 LUs. A link to a survey will be provided both at the end of the webinar and in a follow-up email sent one hour after the end of the webinar. All attendees at each site submit one form: 1) page one: webinar survey and 2) page two: CES report form. The survey must be completed within 24 hours of the webinar. AIA members and IDP record holders will have their credit recorded within 48 hours of the webinar. All attendees will be prompted to download a certificate of completion at the end of the survey.

Julie Hacker, FAIA is a practicing architect and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture. She is
a graduate of Wesleyan University, where she studied psychology and dance, and has a Master of Architecture degree from University of Illinois Chicago, where she was the recipient of the Chicago Women in Architecture Award. She worked for the firm of Hammond Beeby & Babka before joining Stuart Cohen in 1986. Her residential work has been published nationally and internationally and her firm received a Leadership Award from Residential Architect Magazine and was listed by the magazine as one of top 50 residential firms in North America. Her work is the subject of a book Transforming the Traditional, published in 2009. She has lectured widely and served on AIA and on university juries. She currently mentors young architects for the Chicago Chapter of the AIA. In her spare time she raises her 17 yr. old son and competes in Olympic and Ironman Triathlons.
Stuart Cohen, FAIA is a practicing architect and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He is professor emeritus at the University of Illinois Chicago and has been a visiting professor at universities through out the country including Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and Notre Dame. He has an award winning residential architectural practice which was the subject of a 2009 book, Transforming the Traditional: the Work of Cohen & Hacker Architects. The work of his firm is published frequently in “shelter magazines” such as Traditional Home, House Beautiful, and Trends, and he has appeared a number of times on House and Garden TV. He is the author of numerous articles and three books on historic architecture, including North Shore Chicago: Houses of the Lake Front Suburbs and Great Houses of Chicago co-authored with Susan Benjamin. He is currently writing a book on the historic houses of Howard Van Doren Shaw.
