Virtual reality (VR) has been a buzz word for several years now, but designers are harnessing it’s power as a creative design and communication tool. VR is a medium that has the unique ability to accurately simulate the patient's perspective and allow healthcare providers to step into their patient's world before the design process has completed.  By visualizing and understanding first-person experiences, healthcare designers are empowered to provide better design solutions, ultimately providing better quality care to vulnerable patient populations.  This session will review current VR technology and its role in the design process.


After participating in this webinar attendees will:

  1. Identify the current state of VR/AR technology.
  2. Understand the benefits and effectiveness of VR in comparison to other methods of communication and its direct effort on the design on healthcare facilities.
  3. Understand the role of VR in the design process and see examples how virtual reality technology can be used to improve patient-centered care.
  4. Gain insights into the future of VR/AR in the industry and how it virtual reality can influence the design process for the healthcare built environment.




This live course is a collaboration between the Webinar committee and the NextGen  Committee within the Academy of Architecture for Health.  The web-based 60-minute seminars are tailored to provide budding healthcare design professionals with conceptual and practical primer-level knowledge.


Deborah Wingler, PhD, EDAC

Driven by a passion to create healthcare environments that elevate the human spirit and support the health outcomes we all humanly deserve, my research focuses on improving the patient and staff experience through research studies that utilize real-time data collection techniques to elicit insight into patient and staff physiological, psychological and neural responses to high stress healthcare environments. Both in practice and academia, my research has focused on the integration of research into the design process at varying scales, from the development of emerging models of care through multi-year capital projects, to the development of tools to support evidence –based design decisions, and the design of products and platforms to support the delivery of care. 

Callum Vierthaler, AIA, EDAC, LEED AP BD+C
Pulse Design Group
Callum Vierthaler is a licensed architect and project manager specializing in healthcare design and architectural visualization for Pulse Design Group, a healthcare design firm based out of Kansas City. He is a thought leader in architectural technology and its implementation in the industry and has spoken at the AIA National Conference on virtual and augmented reality. Callum was an integral part of establishing Pulse Design Group’s virtual reality department and the development of visualization projects, simulations, and virtual reality research. Callum has taught classes in virtual reality, virtual reality research, and is currently developing a visualization certificate program for the University of Kansas’s School of Architecture and Design. He is also a member of the School’s Health and Wellness program.


Sharmin Kader, Ph.D.

Sharmin Kader, Ph.D. in Architecture, is a designer and researcher with over twelve years of experience. She works as a Design-Research Associate at MTS Engineering and Design, and she is serving as a as a Recognition Chair of the Board of Directors of the Environmental Deign Research Association (EDRA). She has been researching the healthcare environment design since 2008.
