Living Building Challenge and Multifamily Affordable Housing
Course Description
This webinar about the LBC Affordable Housing Pilot program and LBC multifamily case studies will elevate a discussion about methods of practice and project delivery that hold aspirational goals and bold objectives while navigating the sticky challenges of on-the-ground practice in the affordable housing project delivery world. Hear about concrete tactics, obstacles, and how we are pushing to overcome, and how the Pilot has benefited the respective practices and projects of architect speakers Gladys Ly-Au Young with SKL Architects, and Chelsea Johnson with David Baker Architects, through the sharing of case studies: Othello Square, Coliseum Place, and Hunters View. The webinar will provide a platform for discussion about navigating the balance of aspirational and tactical to achieve the greatest impact with every hard-fought affordable housing financial dollar. Susan Puri, Affordable Housing manager with the ILFI, will set the stage by providing an overview of the LBC Affordable Housing Pilot program, it's outreach efforts, resources, and perspective assisting multiple Pilot teams.
Learning Objectives
- After this session, participants will be able to analyze the challenges and opportunities of innovating in the realm of affordable multifamily housing within an aspirational framework like the LBC.
- After this session, participants will be able to summarize methods of framing a project and having discussions with an Owner to remain both aspirational and grounded by investigating the most impactful solutions within the bounds of the project's resources.
- After this session, participants will be able to explore methods of resourcefulness, 'doing a lot with a little' (scope, budget, etc.), and identify shared resources.
- After this session, participants will be able to apply gathered concrete strategies that don't have added cost.

Susan Puri,
Associate, International Living Future Institute
As Affordable Housing Manager, Susan helps affordable housing projects achieve Living Building Certification through the Institute's pilot program. She also helps develop resources and educational materials. Originally from the Atlanta area, Susan attended Georgia Tech where she received a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of City and Regional Planning. She has worked in urban planning and architecture in Georgia and in Beijing, China. She also worked as a LEED Reviewer with Epsten Group for five years, reviewing LEED applications from more than 30 countries and five rating systems.
Gladys Ly-Au Young
Founding Partner, Sundberg Kennedy Ly-Au Young Architects
A founding partner of Sundberg Kennedy Ly-Au Young Architects, Gladys Ly-Au Young is driven by social purpose to design earth-friendly, community-based places that function well, create belonging, and promote health and sustainability. Climate change is real, and Gladys believes our job is to work towards a future that is equitable for people and the environment; her firm's mission is to design buildings that give back more than they take, creating climate change solutions rather than obstacles.
With a core conviction that affordable housing should provide an equitable housing solution to people and the planet, Gladys is developing ways to achieve that. Her current Othello Square Affordable Homeownership building is a pilot project in ILFI's Affordable Housing Pilot program, with a goal to achieve petal certification in Place, Equity and Materials.
Holding both an MS in Sustainable Design from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor of Architecture from Washington State University, Gladys has been applying a deep understanding of sustainable design, sensitivity to context and place, and thoughtful design integrity to projects for 25 years.
Chelsea Johnson, AIA, LEED AP
Associate, David Baker Architects
Chelsea Johnson, AIA, LEED AP, is an Associate at David Baker Architects, a progressive firm based in San Francisco that creates acclaimed affordable housing buildings in diverse urban environments. A California native raised in the Pacific Northwest, Chelsea has a particularly strong interest in the intersection of urban architecture and the natural world, including green site design and the opportunities for the creative expression of innovative sustainable strategies. She is currently designing two projects in the San Francisco Bay Area that are taking part in the Living Building Challenge Affordable Housing Pilot.
