2023 CAE Spring Conference-Pathways to Opportunity

The 2023 Spring conference celebrates AIA’s Core Value of Community: We stand for architecture that strengthens our communities. Join us as we explore a range of educational and civic projects that have a profound impact on the communities they serve, by creating thoughtful and innovative environments.

We celebrate the unique and diverse history of Dallas and Fort Worth, and the cities that connect and surround them.  As we explore the metroplex, we will experience the cultural diversity of the region through its food, its cultural sights and the learning environments that are shaping future generations.  The metroplex has over 200 school districts and 48 colleges and universities, serving nearly 2 million students, and each striving to innovate and envision a better future for their students.  This spring we will visit institutions that are finding unique ways to provide pathways towards opportunity for the students and the communities they serve.

The Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts is one of the nation’s foremost arts magnets, featuring innovative programs in theater, music, dance and visual arts. The school relies on a partnership between the Independent School District and private donors represented by an Advisory Board; in 2001, the board selected Allied Works to complete a major expansion. The project was also an opportunity to revitalize one of Dallas’ important civic icons.

The AD EX Dallas Arts District architecture walking tour examines buildings and developments from the 1890’s to the present day. Participants will explore the architectural detail of the District (including the designs of four Pritzker Prize laureates) as well as the institutions, individuals, and visionaries who are a part of the neighborhood’s fascinating story.

5-7 PM            Happy Hour at the ADEX (Home of Dallas AIA)
Home to AIA Dallas, The ADEX services as a resource for those interested in architecture and design in North Texas and to be the hub for the conversation about how to make our cities better.

Thursday, March 23

 7-7:45 AM      Breakfast Buffet

9- 10:30 AM  Gilbreath-Reed Career and Technical Center, Corgan
To create an education center that supports the local community and advances student opportunity, the new Career and Technology Center (CTC) was envisioned adjacent to a major highway, signifying the important impact on the community. The building promotes professional environments with a focus on real-world application, featuring makerspaces, collaborative, and experimental learning zones. Seamless integration of simulated learning areas creates a cohesive and modern learning environment.

11-12:00 PM      Tour of TECC-W Lewisville Technology, Exploration & Career Center West, Stantec
Based on the idea that many future jobs do not yet exist, Stantec designed TECC-W to cultivate integration. Synergies generated by collaboration between programs will forecast the jobs students encounter upon graduation. A modular design for power, exhaust, and furniture allows shop spaces to switch functions with minimal disruption—what is now welding or woodworking space can later become a robotics or renewables shop. The integrative design process also utilized spaces above the shops and kitchen that would typically go unused. Stacking mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and structural systems allow the kitchen to function uncompromised while cosmetology shops exist above.

12-1 PM           Lunch at TECC-W Lewisville Technology, Exploration & Career Center West, Stantec

2-5 PM           Tour of The University of Texas at Dallas campus

-The University of Texas at Dallas, Sciences Building; Stantec
The primary challenge of this project was to plan and design a research and teaching facility that strikes a balance in being flexible and interdisciplinary while using space efficiently. Stantec's design approach addressed these challenges by identifying and interpreting future needs during programming, where they worked interactively with the stakeholders during multi-day discovery workshops. By asking the right questions followed by tours and small break-out sessions during programming and early design, the process proved effective in identifying needs, building consensus, and providing a strong design.

-University of Texas at Dallas, Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center; Overland Partners, Inc.
As the University of Texas at Dallas continues to expand its reach and reputation, the Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center fills a major void by becoming a prominently located, active meeting place for alumni and students of UT Dallas. A stunning mural wrapper captures the spirit of the campus and the brilliant trajectory of its students and alumni.

-University of Texas at Dallas, Engineering Building; SMITHGROUP
With a meteoric trajectory of growth and a rapidly expanding mechanical engineering program in its infancy, the University of Texas at Dallas seized a rare opportunity: Create a next-generation research facility in concert with a next-generation engineering program. While most engineering buildings focus on either research, instruction or the student experience, the design of this one is a meaningful fusion of all three in a very deliberate, intentionally balanced way.

-University of Texas at Dallas, Edith O'Donnell Arts and Technology Building; STUDIOS Architecture (Design architect), VAI Architects (Architect of record)
The design concept is that of a portal, architecturally communicating the convergence of art and technology, creating a gateway to the campus, and expressing the collaboration and work of the users. The building is designed as two 3-story structures. The tower and the 4-story eastern section of the main building take their cues from the stone cladding on the adjacent School of Management. The tower’s massing also responds to the adjacent Library, and anchors the building to the Mall, the Library, the Student Services Building, and the rest of the campus.

5:30-7:30 PM    Happy Hour at Local Brewery

Friday, March 24

 7-7:45 AM         Breakfast Buffet

9-11    AM          Collin College Technical Campus, Perkins & Will
Situated in the fastest growing county in North Texas, Collin College recognized the need to provide strong technical education, trade, and workforce training to the community. The college also sought to offer more continuing education opportunities for corporate training and workforce partnerships. To accomplish this mission, Collin College embarked on the design and construction of a Technical Center (CCTC) campus in Allen, Texas. Working in close collaboration with the school, we designed a multipurpose building that houses classrooms, science labs, early college and high school programs, student services, learning commons, dining, collaboration zones, conference center, and a wide array of trades and technical spaces. The result: A future-ready campus that provides its students and faculty with the tools and spaces they need for advanced technical education.

11:10 AM – 12:30 PM Allen ISD STEAM Center, VLK|Architects
The two-story arc shaped building was designed with separate high school STEAM and elementary/middle school experience designated entrances with the intention to provide a foundational system promoting curiosity, cultivating future-ready skills, and preparing Allen ISD students for success in STEAM-related areas. The center offers specialized spaces such as engineering and robotics labs, computer labs, computer maintenance instructional programs, science and physics labs, math classrooms, and studios for the architecture and interior design programs.

1:30—3:30 PM           Gunn Junior High School | Fine Arts & Dual Language Academy, Stantec
Gunn Junior High School opened it’s doors in the fall of 1972.  This transformation of Gunn into a fine arts and dual language academy marks the next chapter of this school, and reflects and respects the 47 year history of this school, by creating a design that is inspired by the proud Gator tradition. Much like the real thing, the hangout for the Gunn Gators has been lovingly known as the Swamp. The image of the swamp serves as inspiration for the design of the new Gunn academy, and of the new hangout spaces for its students. The image of the swamp serves as an organizing element at the parti level. The student gathering areas mimic those natural clearings, and invite activity and interaction. Similarly, an abstracted conceptualization of the image of the swamp informs the patterns and materials in the academy. The design also take inspiration from the vision for this new academy. Freedom, Creativity and Empathy are major themes in the vision for this new academy. As students graduate from their elementary academies into Gunn, they will have the freedom to explore and pursue specific areas of interest within the arts. The fine arts along with the dual language curriculum will spark students’ creativity, and will connect them to people with other cultures and backgrounds. That empathy towards different cultures will allow Gunn student to thrive as culturally responsible citizens.

4- 5:30 PM Dr. Sarah Jandrucko Academy for Early Learners, Huckabee
The Dr. Sarah Jandrucko Academy for Early Learners is modeled to function like a museum, providing students ages 3-4 years old with an interactive, engaging and highly visual learning experience. The exterior is modern, yet blends seamlessly with the surrounding neighborhood. Inside, the space is progressive. It features four themed “pods” that align along a main corridor. The corridor angles playfully around to provide access to public amenities. Each pod focuses on a learning experience with classrooms, labs and multi-purpose space used for activities, instruction and dining. Flexible furniture and technology are used alongside interactive learning displays to promote excitement and interest in curriculum. The campus also features an outdoor learning courtyard that can be used for school district and community events.
