Environments for Aging

August 28-31, 2021 | In-person event

The Environments for Aging Expo & Conference offers the latest strategies and ideas for creating functional and attractive living environments that meet the needs of our aging population. During this comprehensive three-day learning experience, attendees will network with peers while learning the latest innovations and best practices in senior friendly design for long-term and residential care settings.

Stop by our Booth #311 in the expo hall to meet DFA leaders, learn more about our programs, and find out how you can get involved. We'll also have our Design for Aging Review 15 Award recipient's gallery boards featured outside the expo hall in L4, L5 and L6.

Add the following DFA sessions to your schedule:

AIA Design for Aging Fellows: Innovations in Senior Living Design Research
E11 | Sunday, August 29 | 2:15-3:15pm | Meeting Room 3

The AIA Design for Aging Knowledge Community Fellowship inspires a younger generation to focus on senior-specific topics and promotes rigorous academic research in design for older adults. The eventual goal is that this research can then be readily applied to improve work across the sector. This session highlights three fellows who will present their research process and findings. The research project topics include: intergenerational communities and the role of a neighborhood environment in older adults’ social interactions and health outcomes; regenerative design for the elderly in post-disaster cities and communities—for example, Houston after Hurricane Harvey; and the development of an interactive, personalized digital tool that utilizes cognitive therapies and creates activities for new family caregivers to do with their loved ones.

AIA DFA Breakfast & Program
Tuesday, August 31 | 7:30-8:30am | Banquet EFG/HIJ

Have you ever wondered how projects win AIA Design For Aging Review Awards? Now is your chance to glean insight into how submissions are reviewed and to learn about what makes a project stand out from the pack. Join the AIA Design for Aging Knowledge Community for breakfast and a moderated panel with jurors from past years to talk about how the process unfolds. Former jurors will spill the beans on what makes for a compelling project, submission, and award winner. They’ll share insights into submission dos and don’ts and speak about where they see these projects and awards headed in the future. The panel will include past jurors, Marc Tolson, Quinn DeMenna, and Dennis Cope and will be moderated by Sarah Gregory.

Resident Safety in a Changing World: How to Create a Resilient Community
E31 | Tuesday, August 31 |  8:30-9:30am | Meeting Room 3

In the past decade, seniors have had to flee floods and fires, stay cool in heat waves, and try to stay safe during a pandemic. Crises like these are likely to increase in the future and, similar to COVID-19, disproportionately impact seniors. This presentation, facilitated by the AIA Design for Aging and Committee on the Environment Knowledge Communities, will provide concrete strategies for design, construction, and operation of resilient communities that are inherently safer, cost owners less over the life of the building, can function as a powerful marketing tool to potential residents, and have lasting positive impact on the environment and its inhabitants.
