End-of-life Care Environment

Description
The physical environment of end-of-life care or hospice care has significant impacts on dying patients’ quality of life and possibility of a good death. This presentation will introduce eleven environmental therapeutic goals for designing end-of-life care settings, such as privacy, access to nature, family accommodation, support after death. These goals reflect two characteristics; each expresses a basic or derived major patient’s need, and a potential environmental facilitator for the satisfaction of the need. The findings were developed from a series of research studies. This session will present the requirements and the design considerations to provide supportive end-of-life care environments for patients, their family members, and staff. A list of design criteria will be shared.
Learning objectives
After participating in this webinar attendees will:
- Gain knowledge about the eleven environmental therapeutic goals for designing end-of-life care settings, such as privacy, autonomy, access to nature.
- Learn how to facilitate the environmental characteristics that have significant impact on patients’ “quality of life” and possibility of a “good death” to achieve satisfaction in end-of-life care.
- Understand the needs of family members at the end-of-life care settings and learn the design considerations for family before and after patients’ death.
- Recognize the requirements and design issues related to provide a supportive environment for the end-of-life care staff.
Ideal audience
This session is part of our Masters Studio sessions, which are tailored to provide healthcare design professionals with sufficient exposure to jump-start interest in wanting to learn more.

Sharmin Kader, Ph.D.
Sharmin Kader, Ph.D. in Architecture, is a designer and researcher with over twelve years of experience. She works as a Design-Research Associate at TreanorHL, and she is serving as a as a Recognition Chair of the Board of Directors of the Environmental Deign Research Association (EDRA). She has been researching the end-of-life care environments since 2011. Sharmin is an expert on post-occupancy evaluation (POE) process, and she has developed the first ever post-occupancy evaluation tool for hospice care environment, Hospice Environmental Assessment Protocol (HEAP). She has presented her work at national and international conferences, and has been the recipient of several awards and honors throughout her academic and professional career.

Michelle Yates, APR, FSMPS, EDAC is Director of Marketing for Lawrence Group, a 160-person design and project delivery firm with offices in Austin, New York and St. Louis. The company offers architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, graphic design, planning, construction and real estate development services. Michelle is a member of the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health webinar committee and president of Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) St. Louis.
