Public Architecture in the Age of Climate Crisis

1 AIA LU/HSW | free

Although we understand the importance of Net Zero Carbon Buildings, we struggle to achieve them. In design, operational and embodied carbon are two sides of the same coin, and as building emissions dwindle, carbon impacts increasingly come from materials and construction processes.

Public architecture plays a vital role in setting precedent for innovation. We can design and build to balance the carbon budget. This interactive workshop explores this critical subject and public architecture’s role in climate action.

Learning objectives

  1. Participants will learn how carbon impacts increasingly come from materials and construction processes.
  2. Participants will learn how some cities now require municipal new construction and major renovations to be all‐electric.
  3. Participants will learn about the possibility to design, build, and occupy buildings to balance the carbon budget.
  4. Participants will review the AIA Framework for Design Excellence metrics to understand and account for carbon throughout the building lifecycle.
