DESCRIPTION:
This presentation will conduct an in-depth exploration of the distinctions between exam, procedure, operating, and imaging rooms in the 2018 FGI Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals. A review of procedure types and levels of invasiveness will take place, as well as evaluation of the potential impact of ASHRAE Standard 170-2017, Addendum L, which works to align the ASHRAE and FGI documents. Finally, we’ll discuss the importance of conducting a clinical risk assessment when planning a new or renovated space. This
presentation builds on an article published in the October 2019 issue of Health Facilities Management.

1. Be able to convey the importance and general need for conducting a clinical assessment when planning clinical spaces
2. Explain the distinctions and requirements for the basic room types where patient encounters take place (i.e., exam, procedure, operating, and imaging rooms)

4. Explain the possible impact of recent revisions to Standard 170-2017, Addendum L

David Shapiro, M.D., is an anesthesiologist who has had extensive experience serving as a department chair, medical director, and board member of several ambulatory surgery centers. In addition, Dr. Shapiro has served as the national medical director on behalf of ASC management corporations, prior to establishing his consulting practice. His areas of expertise encompass a wide range of disciplines primarily focused on all aspects of ASC development, administration, and operations. These include clinical quality, regulatory compliance, and medical liability in the ambulatory surgery arena. David serves on the Boards of the Florida
Society of Ambulatory Surgery Centers, ASC Quality Collaboration, and the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. He also is a member of the Health Guidelines Revision Committee and the FGI Board of Directors.
