Healthcare Design Expo & Conference boasts more than 100 educational sessions providing the latest research, trends, and strategies in the healthcare design industry. You'll also have the chance to connect with industry leaders from around the country, as well as taking in the exhibit hall–featuring hundreds of providers giving demonstrations and showcasing the newest innovative healthcare design products and services that support the design of hospitals and clinic environments.

NextGen Event
The in-person NextGen Forum has been cancelled, however we will host it virtually after HCD. Please stay tuned for more information. The discussion will include examining the path to leadership from captains of the industry and national leaders from The Center for Health Design and the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health.
Update and Reception

Join AIA-AAH members, friends, and leaders for an update on the latest developments within AIA-AAH, followed by a relaxed evening to celebrate our 76th years, connect with old friends, and enjoy great food and refreshments. Attendees will also be able to meet and greet the talented and hard-working STERIS Student Design Charrette participants and the Herman Miller Scholars.
Tuttle Fellowship and GMZ Fellowship Presentation

The AIA Arthur N. Tuttle Jr. Graduate Fellowship in Health Facility Planning and Design supports graduate students and emerging professionals seeking licensure, increasing their awareness of the needs and nature of healthcare facilities, attracting talented young architects and students to the field, and advancing the knowledge of planning and design for healthcare environments. The Griffin/McKahan/Zilm (GMZ) fellowship has been established by three leaders in the healthcare planning through the Academy of Architecture for Health Foundation Legends fund to encourage research into healthcare programming and planning. This session is an opportunity to hear from both the 2019-2020 AIA Arthur N Tuttle Fellows (Herminia Machry and Jiashuo Liu) and the 2019-2020 AIA-AAHF Griffin/McKahan/Zilm Fellow (Lucy Satzewich) and learn about their inspiring and innovative work.
STERIS Student Design Charrette Presentation
October 25, 2:00-4:30pm in Atrium Ballroom B
This exciting annual event is designed to highlight the brilliance and innovation of our future healthcare architects. Students from Iowa State, Kent State, Texas A&M and the University of Texas at San Antonio will bring their creativity and ideas to this fun and evocative design Charrette. During this session the students will present their designs of the 48-hour Charrette held over the previous weekend.

Using "Mickey's 10 Secret Design Commands" to Create World-class Guest Experiences

Walt Disney's Imagineers have utilized 10 design principles to create world-class entertainment experiences in their theme parks that has resulted in a phenomenal 70 percent return visits of first-time visitors. These design principles are organized into five tiers that engage and immerse the guest into creating a truly magical experience. This interactive presentation is a follow-up session from last year's AIA-AAH Therapeutic Forum and will be a deep-dive into how to apply Disney’s principles into healthcare settings and design transformative healthcare environments, answering many of the questions that were posed last year.
Data Modeling Patient Moves: Master Planning Across Multiple Campuses

This case study highlights how Stanford Health Care used big data to model patient volumes moving between different campuses as new diagnostic imaging facilities opened. Each modality was modeled based on historical data, and demand for new modalities were projected to identify how many modalities were needed at different sites. This modeling formed the basis for the first phase of the master plan that completely remodeled an existing 17-modality unit in the main hospital. Modeling and master planning also included a new Minimally Invasive MRI Center with a new business plan for using high-intensity focused ultrasound in conjunction with MRI imaging.
Think Differently: Renovations that Reinvest

This case study follows the various pathways of a lab renovation from the original building designer, to a different architect responsible for updating the lab years later, followed by the director operating the renovated lab, and finally, the lessons learned from an unusual coming together of all parties. The “before-after-during-after again” scenario highlights the value of investing in both design education for users and hands-on operational understanding for designers. Participants’ walk-away knowledge will empower designers to think differently about sizing new buildings for the long view, about renovating with a master plan mentality, and about educating users beyond the tried-and-true benchmarking and mock-ups.
