SF Animal Care & Control: Old Dog, New Tricks

Animal Control as an essential service? That lesson from Hurricane Katrina informed the design approach to this adaptive reuse of a historic 1893 unreinforced masonry building.

With a mission of serving domestic and wild animals, the multi-story animal shelter maintains the original building's character as new construction is set away from the shell to expose original masonry and windows. A roof deck and courtyard offer space for exercising shelter guests. Designed as an essential service building, the facility will remain operational during natural disasters, in response to lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina when animal caretakers refused to abandon their beloved charges.
