CRAN Virtual Seminar Series: Solid Resilience - Between Pragmatic and Projective Design Thinking in

When:  Dec 2, 2020 from 01:00 PM to 02:30 PM (ET)

CRAN Virtual Seminar Series: Solid Resilience - Between Pragmatic and Projective Design Thinking in Miami

At the conclusion of each seminar, there will be a 30-minute discussion with Platinum Sponsor Andersen Windows & Doors about how they are implementing COVID-19 safety, sustainability, and social justice. This discussion does not include AIAU learning units.

Course Description

The project Solid Resilience acknowledges an obligation to confront the blasé attitude towards architectural decisions responsible for shaping our environment. Architecture must acknowledge an evolving ecological dialogue; capable of developing strategies and techniques that anticipate dynamic and active environments. The project Solid Resilience takes a bold approach to this problem by establishing the design process through the lens of ecology, material, and resource. The presentation will offer a dialogue on the project’s exploration for a new model of residential design established through innovative and resilient construction methodologies, focused sub-tropical formal strategies, and contextual empathetic design-decision making.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be introduced to the emerging mass-timber building assembly cross-laminated timber [CLT] and understand its inherent ecological characteristics.
  2. Participants will be introduced to the emerging mass-timber building assembly cross-laminated timber [CLT] and understand its inherent ecological characteristics.
  3. Participants will be able to understand the process of performative design through a comparative analysis of building assembly types.
  4. Participants will be able to identify performative design parameters of building through the application of sub-tropical design strategies.

Speakers

Christopher and Shawna Meyer, Founding Principals, Atelies Mey
Atelier Mey is a collective of architects who enjoy confronting the circumstance of architecture. The architecture is conscious and generative–it is actively engaged in setting and curious of the novel. The work of Atelier Mey is committed to design excellence.

Projects are realized at varying scales and range from the intimacy of the human body to the assemblage of architecture into urbanism. In relation to specific project inquiries, collaborative transdisciplinary teams contribute to an open dialogue inclusive of geography, material science, energy, and biology.

Rooted in pedagogical frameworks, academic inquiries act as provocations for the practice of Atelier Mey, while the firm engages in partnerships with industry leaders and manufacturers for both speculative and built work. The work is inherently sustainable and dedicated to craft.

Christopher Meyer, AIA, and Shawna Meyer, AIA are the firm’s founding principals, first collaborating on material explorations and the design and making of a series of small-scaled built artifacts and furniture pieces in 2010. Atelier Mey was later established in Miami as an interdisciplinary full-service design firm building on two decades of professional design experience.
