A06 - AIA-AAH STERIS Student Design Charrette Mid Term Review & Critique
Saturday, October 8, 9am–12pm
This relaxed mid-term review and critique of this exciting annual event is designed to highlight the brilliance and innovation of our future healthcare architects. Student teams from four universities will bring their creativity and ideas to this fun and evocative design challenge. This is a chance for professionals to meet some of the next generation of healthcare designers and give feedback on their design progress at the midpoint of the charrette.
E09 - Designing Clinical Labs for Safety, Security, and Success (AAH Forum)
Sunday, October 9, 9:30-10:30am
A clinical laboratory requires thoughtful evaluation of many design facets to achieve a successful outcome. These complex spaces must protect clinical laboratory scientists from biohazard and chemical exposure. Additionally, patient diagnosis, safety, and recovery are largely driven by laboratory results. To support this purpose, the building must facilitate secure handling of samples and patient information; testing accuracy also dictates strict control of temperature and humidity. Using case studies, this session will explore best practices in clinical laboratory design and crucial early design decisions, such as adjacencies and paths for specimen, personnel, supplies, and waste.
E19- Use Data You Already Have to Make Better Planning Decisions (AAH Forum)
Sunday, October 9, 10:45-11:45am
Think simulation modeling is the only way to understand your facility’s throughput? Think again. This presentation will empower attendees to use data they already have to make better planning decisions and reveal key insights that can be applied during the design and decision-making process. Presenters explore how readily available parts of the electronic medical record (EMR), including length of stay, ED acuity and disposition status can indicate operational patterns and drive space programming decisions. Learn how to leverage parts of your EMR to independently unearth high-level operational trends, then discover how to use those trends to make key planning unit decisions—all without hiring an industrial engineer.
E29- The Integration of Practice and the Classroom: Professional Internships in Architectural Education (AAH Forum)
Sunday, October 9, 1:45-2:45pm
What makes a successful student internship experience? Does it provide valuable learning exposure, opportunities for practitioners to impact the educational experience, and mutual exploration of long-term working practice relationships? This AIA Academy on Architecture for Health forum will explore alternative internship models, first-hand student and practitioner insights, and an open discussion of effective experiences. Come share your perspective and recommendations regarding this important component in the development of architects and other designers.
A11 - AIA-AAH NextGen Event
Sunday, October 9, 5:30–7pm
In the world of healthcare design, no two career paths are alike. This annual panel event, hosted by the AAH NextGen committee, will feature perspectives and insights from a diverse group of leaders in the planning, design, and operation of healthcare facilities. Discussion topics and Q&A will be aimed at sharing knowledge and personal experiences to bridge the gap between the next generation of healthcare architects and current leaders in the industry.
A13 - AIA-AAH Update and Reception/Celebration

A14 - AIA-AAH Tuttle Fellowship and GMZ Fellowship Presentation
Monday, October 10, 10:45am– 12:15pm
The AIA Arthur N. Tuttle Jr. Graduate Fellowship in Health Facility Planning and Design supports graduate students to increase awareness of the needs and nature of health care facilities, and to advance the knowledge of planning and design for healthcare environments. The Griffin/McKahan/Zilm (GMZ) fellowship has been established by three leaders in health care planning and design through the Foundation for Health Environments Research to encourage research in health care programming and planning. This session is an opportunity to hear from recent AIA Arthur N Tuttle and GMZ fellows and learn about their inspiring and innovative work, as listed below:

R15- AIA/AAH Case Studies: A Dialogue on Benchmarking
Tuesday, October 11, 8:15-9:15am
The AIA/AAH Research Initiatives committee calls upon the industry to join us in a round table dialogue to shape the committee’s ongoing and expanding benchmarking efforts. The committee is looking for feedback on the value of the metrics currently being tracked and the level of interest in other measurable metrics to be studied. Utilizing data from the past 41 award-winning healthcare projects and case studies, they are analyzing the metric trends and their value. Discussions will include how various circulation, supply chain, and operational strategies influence the net and gross square footage calculations and metrics per exam room.
