RUDC Symposium: International Migrations: Local to Global (2 LU)
Day 1

Migrations is the fourth AIA RUDC Symposium on the Future of Urban Design Education and Practice. This series addresses critical challenges facing the profession of architecture and brings together practitioners, educators, and theorists to assert innovative solutions to address them. Previous sessions probed strategies to address the impacts of the pandemic and public health, the climate, and mechanisms to bridge teaching and practice.  The fall 2021 symposium is divided into two sessions that highlight disruptive migration patterns at a variety of scales and their impacts on contemporary notions of urbanism.

Session Description

Urban design thinking requires the capacity to transcend real or implied boundaries and question issues of scale. International Migrations brings together the perspectives of three leading designers to critique how borders (literal, political, social, and geographic) are impacting settlement patterns across the globe in Europe, Asia, and Central America.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the impacts of water scarcity and political strife that impact inequities along the US/Mexico border
  2. Highlight how housing affordability, shifting economic fortunes and access to public transit impacts the migration patterns from the rural to the urban in Asia
  3. Reveal the impacts of out-migration on "temporary" settlements for refugees and displaced persons in Europe
  4. Identify trends emerging in the major urban centers as they address shifts in the global economy
  5. Articulate the UN Habitat’s New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals relative to the nearly 1 billion people living in temporary settlements.
