DESCRIPTION:

In the time of the COVID-19 outbreak and resulting additional governmental and business restrictions for conducting in-person activities to support construction, the architecture profession is working to resolve the support of work that many jurisdictions have deemed “essential” while keeping staff as safe. This panel invites representatives of large firms, from around the country to discuss the challenges and perspectives occurring around the country, how firms are rising to the challenge, and where the industry may be impacted in both the short- and long-term.

    

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 

After participating in this webinar attendees will:

  1. Identify current challenges related to restrictions to travel, site access, staff safety and compliance with local regulations, resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak.
  2. Discuss policies being implemented to overcome these challenges and fulfill contract requirements for Construction Phase Services.
  3. Identify Technology solutions, such as 3D cameras, Action Cameras (i.e.GoPro,) drones and other tools being deployed to maximize virtual observations of construction phase activities, limiting community spread of COVID-19.
  4. Discuss potential short-term and long-term shifts in the industry and Professional Practice that are driven by the challenges resulting from COVID-19.

Robert Barfield, AIA
Architect, Gresham Smith

Robert G. Barfield is an architect and associate with Gresham Smith in the healthcare studio of the Charlotte, NC office. His primary focus within the firm is construction administration and building enclosure consulting. He is a certified construction contract administrator and a building enclosure commissioning authority. Robert received his Bachelor or Architecture degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Robert is currently a member of the AIA/AGC Joint Committee(nationally) as well as serving on the leadership group for the Construction Contract Administration Knowledge Community and has previously served the AIA as the YAF Community Director and the South Atlantic Regional Director for Young Architect’s Forum.

Paloma Toledo is a Senior Designer at HOK based in New York City. Originally from Spain, she graduated in Technical Architecture by the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Paloma’s early design experience in her home country included Educational and Residential rehabilitation projects. Prior to joining HOK, Paloma worked on wide variety of interior fit-out projects at airports in the NY & NJ metropolitan region.

Upon joining HOK, Paloma was enlisted to play a leadership role on the phasing and enabling efforts related to the new P3 Terminal B Redevelopment work at LaGuardia Airport.

Mark Walsh, AIA

Mark has over twenty-five years of experience in design and construction coordination for all phases of project design and delivery, from programming and pre-design through construction contract administration. Mark's experience includes numerous project types, including higher education, K-12 education, corporate, commercial, civil, healthcare, science and technology and sports and recreation. As Global Director of Technical Design Mark has a focus on developing a culture that delivers the highest quality of technical excellence while embracing innovative construction and delivery techniques and seeking to improve efficiency across the Firm. In this capacity, he also co-chairs the Firm Wide Technical Design Community and participates in the Firm’s Project Delivery Board. In his complementary role as Technical Director of Perkins and Will's Chicago office, Mark oversees the technical design, quality assurance/quality control and project delivery of all architectural and interior design projects delivered by that office. Finally, Mark is a co-founder of the Perkins and Will Innovation Incubator and has been an active member of the selection and oversight committee since the program's inception in 2007.
