Panelists will provide insight into the latest technologies and how owners are making decisions at an increased pace for assuring connectivity and investments in systems that improve the quality of care.

FGI 2022 Edition: Changes Coming to the Emergency Department
June 2 | 10:45-11:45am CT

This session will discuss major additions and revisions to the emergency department (ED) sections and the freestanding emergency department chapter of the FGI 2022 Guidelines for Design and Construction documents. Bryan Langlands (NBBJ) and John Williams (Washington State Department of Health), both leaders in the 2022 Health Guidelines Revision Committee, will review the changes and discuss the thinking behind new clinical spaces introduced in the 2022 edition.


AIA/AAH PDC Student Challenge: Looking Back at the Past Success Stories

The AIA/AAH PDC Planning + Design Student Challenge is a multidisciplinary challenge of students in architecture, construction, engineering and nursing school that join together and create teams to complete a project in 48 hours. The purpose is to produce a project with regards to all disciplines with a focus on creating an effective team. The PDC Student Challenge has been extremely successful throughout its running years, from 2015 to 2019. The challenge will continue in the upcoming years, but this year’s pause is a perfect time to look back at the past five years and see where some of the faculty and student participants are now! The panel will discuss how the PDC Student Challenge is a unique experience for faculty members, and the value it had and still has on the student participants.

Codes + Standards Forum: Building Code Updates

This presentation will provide information on the alignment of the International Building Code (IBC) and Life Safety Code since the International Code Council (ICC) code development in 2011. This will be explained along with the important changes being made to the 2021 IBC, followed by a brief discussion on what we are doing for the 2024 cycle.

Rural Health and Changes Impacting Small, Rural Hospitals

This session reviews work of the FGI HGRC’s Rural Health topic group as they considered the 2022 version of the Guidelines under the specific lens of rural inpatient and outpatient health care.

Major Revisions of the Draft FGI 2022 Guidelines

This panel discussion will cover expected changes in the 2022 Guidelines including behavioral and mental health spaces, clinical treatment spaces, and patient care areas such as burn units and hospice units. Updates revisit familiar topics (e.g., AII anterooms) and reflect new perspectives (e.g., inclusive environments), all while balancing the need to make design affordable, accessible and maintainable.

A Disastrous Session: New FGI Guidelines on Emergency Conditions
