Webinar - Toward Zero-Carbon Housing

When:  May 4, 2020 from 12:00 PM to 01:00 PM (ET)

Toward Zero-Carbon Housing

Course Description

This course begins to tackle a big question: where do the goals of meeting housing needs, preparing for climate change impacts, and reducing greenhouse gases intersect? To be successful, housing created now must be built to be a resilient foundation for a sustainable urban future that does not further social inequities exacerbated by climate change. As a first step, several states are leading a move away from on-site fossil fuel use, and toward on-site renewable energy and electric vehicles, all of which impact how we think about designing multifamily housing. Three presentations will review the current trends, outlook, and unanswered questions around policy, technology, and process of designing all-electric, zero-emissions housing.

Learning Objectives

  1. Clearly define all-electric, zero-emissions housing within the larger context of climate change response and adaptation in urban communities.
  2. Understand current electrification policy initiatives and what the outlook is for decarbonization efforts across the country.
  3. Come away with concrete, cost-effective technical strategies to eliminate on-site gas combustion and increase on-site renewable energy generation.
  4. Address how to manage a successful process as an architect, from defining consultant scopes and leveraging certifications to managing cost.

Speakers:

Andrew Brooks, CEM, CPHC, BPI
Director of West Coast Operations for the Association for Energy Affordability (AEA)

Andrew is responsible for the delivery of technical services, project management, program design and implementation, strategic planning, and business development.  He is engaged in many of AEA’s national technical services, training and research and demonstration efforts. Andrew leads a team of dedicated energy analysts and engineers who are committed to improving building performance and efficiency through applied building science and sound engineering.  Andrew has been involved in hundreds of energy audits of multifamily and commercial buildings and has provided services to a variety of clients including utilities, local government agencies, the U.S. Department of Energy, property owners, developers, management companies, and architectural and engineering firms in both California and New York. He has spent the last four years largely focused on building decarbonization technology and implementation strategies and energy equity related issues.

Pierre Delforge
Senior Scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)

Pierre joined NRDC in 2010 after a 20-year career in the technology industry. At NRDC, he works on policies to decarbonize buildings, with a focus on energy efficiency and electrification of heating and hot water. Pierre is based in San Francisco.

Katie Ackerly. LEED AP, CPHC
Associate at David Baker Architects

Katie is DBA’s Sustainability Lead, and acts as the firm’s resource and advocate for building-performance tools and best practices. Katie came to architecture from energy efficiency policy, following an interest in how building performance solutions are communicated across disciplines. Katie holds both a Master of Architecture and a Master of Science in Building Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and she teaches a course on building energy fundamentals at California College of the Arts.
