Managing Your Energy Modeler in Early Design: High-Performance Buildings

SA412 | 1.50 LU/HSW/GBCI/RIBA

This is a 90-minute session scheduled at A’19 for Saturday afternoon. The session will include hands-on participation and demonstrations.

The session is intended for managers and designers who would like to lower the cost of achieving high-performance buildings through integrated design during the critical early design phase. Managing the energy modeler, and integrating the modeler into this early process, is critical to the success of this early team process.

The session focuses on how you can obtain energy simulation results quickly and at low cost to verify your early design assumptions. Your energy modeler will face special challenges in producing accurate results quickly when many details about the design are not yet available. This session presents you with hands-on problems for you to solve, coupled with example results from typical simulations.

Abstract
During early design, it is important for you to set goals and to determine key design directions to producer cost-effective high-performance buildings. Energy simulations are key tools during early design to determine if your design decisions are as effective as you might assume. During early design, you will need simulation results quickly and at low cost to verify your assumptions. Producing timely and low-cost simulations in early design is a challenge for energy modelers. They face special challenges in producing accurate results quickly when many details about the design are not yet available. This session will provide examples of overviews of simulation solutions for design problems that arise in early design. This session is highly interactive.

Learner engagement
The session will be team-taught and will include two participant exercises. You will be presented with several early design situations and problems for you to solve in small groups. A few typical building types and climate locations will be used. For example, schools, apartments, offices in Houston, Virginia Beach, Grand Rapids Michigan. You will see how goals can be set, and solutions are explored by the team with results documented by the modeler.

Presenters & tools
The 3 presenters and the session organizer are all highly experienced energy modelers. Two are architects, and two are engineers. They will interact with you to discuss example design problems and solutions via the use of several energy models typically used today.
