Health campus planning is tantamount to city planning, but arguably more challenging. It is overlain by a mission of health; a goal to provide the best patient experiences and outcomes possible. This presentation will focus on best practices of health campus planning and site design that collectively help to achieve these goals: access and circulation, land use zoning, parking design and pedestrian safety, sustainability and resilience, mass casualty / pandemic response and long term, flexible growth.
The discipline of site planning and design has a critical responsibility to successfully meld city and clinical planning principles within a healthcare campus. Join the webinar to hear the perspective of a landscape architect and campus planner who has been embedded with healthcare planners, architects and consultants on large, complicated healthcare projects for twenty years.

Jeff Fahs is the director of Site Design at HDR and is responsible for providing strategic direction and overall leadership for six site design studios. He thrives in the day-to-day work life of a site design leader, which is fast-paced and deadline-driven, with dozens of projects on the boards across the globe. During his career at HDR, Fahs has provided diverse leadership roles on many of HDR’s largest and most complex projects. He was also responsible for establishing and directing the growth of the Chicago site design practice over the last 16 years. Fahs is a member of the Illinois Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and a former Education Chair and a member of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA). He has lectured on site planning and design at the University of Georgia, University of Trinidad and Tobago; University of Nebraska; Iowa State University; and the J.S. Morton East High School in Chicago.
