CRAN Virtual Seminar Series:
Beauty and Performance – Exploring the Framework for Design Excellence on Residential Projects
Course Description
This seminar introduces the AIA's Framework for Design Excellence, adopted by the AIA in 2019, that builds upon the AIA COTE Top Ten Award criteria, first introduced in 1997. The session will focus on measures of Economy, Materials, and Wellness and how these are uniquely applied to custom residential projects.
Learning Objectives
Participants will understand the AIA's Framework for Design Excellence and how it can be applied on custom residential projects.
Participants will explore The Design for Resources measure in depth and be able to describe both traditional measures alongside novel tools and processes for reducing material impacts and optimizing embodied carbon on projects.
Participants will be able to communicate how the Framework addresses criteria for occupant wellness including daylighting, air quality, acoustics, and healthy materials.
Participants will explore best practices and high impact strategies to assess value through the Design for Economy measure that defines good design work.
Speakers
Tate Walker, Director of Sustainability, OPN Architects Inc.
Tate Walker, AIA is the Director of Sustainability at OPN Architects and leads projects and initiatives across the firm. His experience is rooted in the architectural design process but includes program and project management, and the development of technical guidelines for high performing buildings. He has served many organizations, including cities and universities, AIA’s Committee on the Environment, AIA’s 2030 Commitment, and the USGBC’s Energy & Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group. In 2018, Tate co-authored the COTE Toolkit, which assembles best practices, exemplary projects, metrics, and research to support the design of beautiful, high performing buildings. In 2019, AIA adopted the toolkit as the Framework for Design Excellence for the entire membership, to support a zero carbon, equitable, resilient future.
