Abstract:
The fundamentals of value delivery for architects have remained largely unchanged since Benjamin Latrobe rode the Virginia countryside plying his architectural trade to the builders of the new republic. The design and construction propositions have evolved considerably since then, but practice models are essentially based upon the exchange of time/services for money. Twenty-first century trends in digital delivery, automated construction, data analytics, and integration are clues to potentially refactoring these models, with new possibilities emerging in for the roles, responsibilities, and value of architectural practice. This talk will explore several strategies for new value creation in both theory and practice, and include examination of several next-generation firms who are setting the pace for the future.
Biography:
Phil Bernstein is an architect, technologist, and educator who is an Associate Dean and Professor, Adjunct at the Yale School of Architecture, where he has taught since 1988. He was formerly a Vice President at Autodesk, where he was responsible for setting the company’s future vision and strategy for technology and sustaining the firm's relationships with strategic industry leaders and associations. Prior to joining Autodesk, Phil practiced architecture as a principal at Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects where he managed many of the firm’s most complex commissions including projects for Reagan National Airport, the Mayo Clinic, and Goldman Sachs. He writes and lectures extensively about practice and technology issues. Phil was co-editor of Building (In) The Future: Recasting Labor in Architecture, as well as BIM in the Academia: Technology’s Implications for Practice and the Academy. His books include Architecture | Design | Data – Practice Competency in the Era of Computation (Birkhauser, 2018) and Machine Design: Architectural Futures in the Era of Artificial Intelligence to be published by RIBA in early 20222. Phil was the executive responsible for Autodesk’s Waltham AEC Headquarters project, the first fully integrated delivery (IPD) project in the United States, which received design and technology innovation awards from the American Institute of Architects, Business Week/Architectural Record, the Association of General Contractors and Interiors Magazine. Phil has been honored twice by DesignIntelligence as one of the “30 Most Admired Educators in Architecture” and was named as an Outstanding Industry Contributor by the Connecticut Construction Institute. He received a Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude with Distinction in Architecture from Yale University and a Master of Architecture also from Yale. He is a a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council and former Chair of the AIA National Contract Documents Committee. He is licensed to practice in California.
