DESCRIPTION:

Hospital design has changed throughout the history. This session will present a retrospective review of hospital design transformation due to a disaster or unforeseen event, such as, the developments of pavilion plan by Florence Nightingale. Various types of disasters or events will be discussed, and the lessons learned, and how those drive the need for the design change. For example, due to the experience of Hurricane Katrina, the design strategies for evacuating the ICU patient from hospital facility has improved. This session will also review the global response in hospital design for COVID-19, and the future challenges and preparedness.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After participating in this webinar attendees will:

Sharmin Kader, Ph.D. in Architecture, is a designer and researcher with over twelve years of experience. She works as a Design-Research Associate at MTS Engineering and Design, and she is serving as a Recognition Chair of the Board of Directors of the Environmental Deign Research Association (EDRA). She has been researching the healthcare environment design since 2008. Her master’s thesis focused on hospital patient evacuation during disaster scenarios: https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/4276437.pdf She has presented her work at national and international conferences, and she has been the recipient of several awards and honors throughout her academic and professional career.

Arsalan Gharaveis, Ph.D., Assoc. AIA, IIA, MARC, EDAC

Arsalan Gharaveis, Ph.D., Assoc. AIA, IIA, MARC, EDAC is a healthcare planner, designer, and researcher. Gharaveis has more than a decade of experience in design and conducting research regarding the impact of the environment on behavior in both the United States and Middle Eastern countries. Also, Gharaveis has won recognition for his design and creative work on different projects including AIA Houston for designing the expansion of the University of Texas Medical Center in Austin, Junior Architects Award for Ahwaz library, and Gulf Countries Design for the Kuwait hospital. Also, Gharaveis artwork has been exhibited at Texas A&M’s Wirght Gallery, and Southeast Missouri University.
