E09 - AIA AAH Laboratory Planning & Design Forum
November 3, 9:30-10:30am

In the last decade, New Orleans-based EskewDumezRipple has emerged as a leader in the Deep South of architectural practices integrating award-winning design excellence with high performance outcomes (measured in terms of energy performance, stormwater handling, daylighting, and indoor air quality). They drawn on lessons learned from what worked and what didn't in post-Katrina New Orleans to become recognized as a national advocate for resilient design in all building types. Their work is still grounded in the themes embodied in the vernacular architecture of the Deep South, but applies these lessons to unabashedly modern laboratory, healthcare, healthcare education, and other projects.

E39 - AIA-AAH Research-Based Design for a Neuroscience Institute: Designing for the Brain, Body and Care
November 3, 3-4pm

The clinicians, patients and researchers at the University of Cincinnati Gardner Neuroscience Institute, informed neuroarchitectural design principles based on insights from experts at their 15 centers of excellence in outpatient and diagnostic care for neurology and neurosurgery patients. Pre and post occupancy observations of clinicians and patients will be presented by design team, the client, and Prof. Quilan, MD, who is both a provider and patient. Their Patient Advisory Council represented increasingly prevalent neural conditions including stroke, neurotrauma, Parkinson’s, MS, memory and mood disorders. Evidence-based design solutions consider ambulatory, sensory and cognitive conditions, as well as clinicians delivering advanced medical care and research. Clinical observations, surveys and interviews are included in preliminary results to measure the success of their vision, and the experience of patients and clinicians.

A16 - AIA AAH Update, Reception, and Charrette Celebration

I16 - AIA AAH Research Forum 2019
November 5, 8:15-9:15am

At HCD 2016 and HCD 2018, the AAH Research Initiative Committee presented a “Case for Case Studies,” and “21 Case Studies in the AIA/AAH Case Study Library” respectively. This year, the presentation will be an open discussion on this benchmarking methodology with case study results in an attempt to improve its usefulness, as we continue to build a larger database of these case studies as a benchmarking tool. We hope to identify ways to make create a more rigorous, accessible and useful tool to enrich both the Practice and Research within Design. Our aim is to facilitate a much needed larger DIALOGUE within both the Design and RESEARCH Communities.

I17 - AIA AAH Architecture + Health Education Forum
November 5, 9:30-10:30am

This forum is intended to allow educators involved in programs, studios or courses focused on healthcare architecture and design professionals interested in education to discuss issues of content, curriculum and pedagogy. It is also intended to explore ways to better integrate academia, the design profession, and the healthcare industry at large.
