AIA Design for Aging Knowledge Community: 2021 Fellows Presentation of Senior Living Design Research
E15 | April 3 | 2:15-3:15pm | Wisconsin Center, Room 102DE

In 2021, the AIA Design for Aging Knowledge Community awarded research fellowships to two recipients. The intent of these fellowships is to engage a younger generation and to promote rigorous academic research in design for seniors. The goal is that this research can be readily applied to senior living design projects. In this session, each fellow will present their research process and findings. The two topics include: (1) how biophilic design features in the built environment affect the rate of social participation of older adults; and (2) the challenges and adaptive behavior of older women from Indonesia when conducting food-related activities and cleaning in their home environment.

DFA Breakfast and Program: Building Something Memorable – Together
April 5 | 7:30-8:30am | Wisconsin Center, Room 103C

Creating memory care that is innovative and welcoming with ample resident support, designers, owners, and operators must work together as an effective team. But what does it take to build a high-functioning team that gets results and achieves the outcomes they want? How do we leverage each person’s unique skills and experience to plan for and build safe spaces that engage residents and promote ongoing wellness for what is often a range of cognitive abilities? Our panelists have wisdom to share about how they’ve made this happen in the past, what’s worked well – and what hasn’t.

Join panelists Josh Freitas, an award-winning memory care program developer, researcher, and author currently working as the VP of program development for CERTUS Senior Living and Chief Research Officer at the CERTUS Institute, James F. Sagstetter, Healthcare Programmer and Planner for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, Melinda Avila Torio, Associate Principal and Senior Interior Designer at THW Design, and our moderator, Suzanne Barnes, founder and owner of ArchitectLINK, for a breakfast event filled with insights about how these experts have brought exceptional projects to life through exceptional teamwork.

All EFA attendees are welcome and encouraged to attend.
