Virtual Charrette: The Ins and Outs of Access Control

DESCRIPTION:
How the people enter and exit the built environment is a uniquely important, often overlooked and deceivingly complicated design challenge. While this is further exaggerated when addressed within Retail and Entertainment venues with very high occupant loads and/ or the protection of valuable assets, this is hardly the only venue type with its own unique circumstances. Places of education deal with the growing threats of school violence, judicial facilities have to separate judges and restrain the accused, financial and civic facilities have to protect money, politicians and other targets of importance– just to name a few. This collaborative discussion will provide insight on strategies, devices and systems from multiple project types and perspectives to help Architects think of new ways to implement access control solutions for their own specific project types.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After participating in this webinar attendees will:
1. Identify accessibility issues with current access control strategies including looking at issues equitable access; automatic operators; Manual dexterity/physical manipulation of devices and looking at Spacing/circulation (person traps, institutional facilities, multi-level arenas)
2. Compare disparate and sometimes contradictory access control needs of venues including occupant safety and building/ site protection; Prevention of weapons entering large assemblies; Asset management/loss prevention; Visitor management in educational facilities and Circulation separation in judicial facilities
3. Understand the experiential impacts of access control systems and devices accounting for the user experience; keeping ingress/ egress moving smoothly for large venues – stress of cattle herd and visual impact of cameras, metal detectors, etc. – stress of being watched; raising awareness of dangers that may not be inherently evident
4. Learn tactics to identify the right questions with clients to properly inform the selections of building specific designs, tools and products.
