Program

More and more of the world's population lives in cities. While density is great for sustainability, making dense urban environments more livable is an essential design challenge for our future.

This session will explore how to move mixed use beyond mere adjacency and go vertical. Learn about the challenges and benefits of stacking uses, integrating transit and infrastructure, and incorporating green and open spaces throughout a building.

You'll walk away with a clear strategy for making city buildings more functional, livable, and vital. In addition, the session will touch on vertical integration of diverse uses within one building and crafting artful separation as the key to sharing space.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand the benefits of increased density and those of higher density to other sustainability strategies.
  2. Identify five key strategies for vertical integration, including use integration, use separation, connectivity, integrated open spaces, and use diversity, as well as the design challenges and opportunities inherent in each.
  3. Recognize the economic and social value to vertically arranged uses versus traditional horizontal arrangements, and how such integration can align with the policy goals of cities and transit/transportation agencies.
  4. Comprehend the design opportunities and challenges of vertically organized higher-density development along with ways to express programmatic differences, configure shared spaces, and embrace urban infrastructure.
