Who we are

The Committee on the Environment (COTE®) is an AIA Knowledge Community working for architects, allied professionals, and the public to achieve climate action and climate justice through design. We believe that design excellence is the foundation of a healthy, sustainable, and equitable future. Our work promotes design strategies that empower all AIA members to realize the best social and environmental outcomes with the clients and the communities they serve.

Between 2022 and 2050, population growth and human development investment will necessitate billions of square meters of new construction and infrastructure in the Global South. All this development will be undertaken simultaneously with increasing climate change impacts and the need for adaptive buildings and infrastructure. HOW do we build out all the development that is projected to take place, and do it sustainably, equitably, and with zero carbon emissions? Presenters will set out necessary design and construction guidelines, with regional examples, for equitable and resilient development to meet 50% x 2030 emissions reduction targets.
