This project involved a “down-to-the-studs” renovation and addition to a 1970’s era home on Whidbey Island, Washington. The architect was contacted by the owners shortly after they had purchased the property as a weekend getaway & gathering place for their family. The home sits perched at the top of a southwest facing bluff with spectacular views across Puget Sound to the Olympic Peninsula and Mountain Range. The existing home was sited quite nicely to take advantage of these views, but relatively low ceilings, cropped window openings and a small deteriorating deck left plenty of room for improvement. The primary goals for the project were: - take full advantage of the site by raising the ceiling height across the front of the home to create more volume and natural light - create a strong connection between the interior and exterior to allow the living space to spill out onto a large deck area - improve the energy efficiency and comfort of the home - an overall update to the appearance of the home inside and out and, - add family room/gathering space for visiting kids and future grandkids. Stig Carlson Architecture started the process of achieving these goals by removing the existing low sloped roof across the front of the house and replacing it with higher flat roof that allowed an extra two feet of ceiling height in the space. The entire front wall of the home was removed and reframed to include floor-to-ceiling windows, and a large operable NanaWall system was installed connecting the living/dining space to a new exterior deck. On the inside, walls were stripped to the studs, resealed and re-insulated to create a nice tight envelope. A new concrete topping slab was poured throughout the main floor and was stained & polished with a deep brown color. A new hydronic heating system was installed incorporating a very high-efficiency Daikin Altherma air-to-water heat pump, fresh air is supplied through an HRV system. On the exterior, old siding was replaced with new panelized rain-screen siding and new metal roofing was installed. The project also includes a 3.24 kW solar panel array.
