Who we are

Universal Design has been defined as “the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.” This definition was developed by the architect Ron Mace, FAIA, an architect and the founder of the Center for Universal Design at N.C. State University. In recent years, architects and designers in the US and abroad have come to recognize significant and growing overlaps between Universal Design principles and emerging values of social and environmental sustainability.

Save the date for our 2016 AccessEngineering Capacity Building Institute (CBI): Universally Designed Learning and Learning about Universal Design.

The CBI will be held April 6-8, 2016 in Seattle, WA and will bring together engineering faculty, disability experts, and engineering students and professionals with disabilities.

Attendees will share their expertise and work together to create resources. We will focus on three themes during the meeting:

    • Accessible hands-on learning: Makerspaces, machine shops, and labs
    • Integrating universal design in project-based design courses
    • Developing resources for recruiting and retaining students with disabilities in engineering

Travel, food, and conference materials will be covered by AccessEngineering.  AccessEngineering is an NSF-funded project that works to increase the participation of people with disabilities in education and careers in engineering and improve engineering fields with their perspectives and expertise.

Teams representing multiple stakeholders from a university, including faculty, administrators, disability service professionals, and students with disabilities are encouraged to apply.  Apply now at https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/blaser/282722.

We are particularly interested in reaching individuals who have not attended a previous CBI.  If you know others who would be interested in this topic, please share this email with them.

    Best,
