The history of school design in the United States has been an unfolding process in which the social and physical environments have been planned in response to the needs of each. Due to the advancements in pedagogical and child developmental theories, the social environment influenced the organization of the physical environment. The concepts that influenced the organization of the physical environment in turn became the guiding principles that have shaped and structured the social environment.
