    DESCRIPTION:

Targeting more appropriate emergency department utilization and focusing care on those in actual need of emergency care has been a systemic pre-occupation of somatic medicine for several years. During that same period, the utilization of emergency departments for mental health care has grown significantly adding real pressures to emergency department operations and adding an increasingly challenging population to the ED case mix. This combination of systemic change in care models coupled with an increased volume has created a crisis for both emergency departments and for the care of those suffering from emergent mental illness.

In response to both crises, new care models, care settings and systemic responses have emerged to better manage the flow of care and to improve the setting in which care is provided. This webinar will discuss these trends with an emphasis on recent thinking about the appropriate care environment for treating emergent mental illness. We will discuss both the systemic trends underlying the changes that we are beginning to experience and will show examples of care environments that are responding to these trends.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After participating in this webinar attendees will:

    1. Understand the range of settings in which emergent mental illness is treated.
    2. Understand the impact that systemic change could have on care volumes and care setting design.
    3. Have learned about key drivers influencing the planning and design of environments supporting the care of emergent mental illness.
    4. Better understand the flows between settings and services on the emergent care treatment continuum.
