Who we are

The AIA Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Community (TAP) serves as a resource for AIA members, the profession, and the public in the deployment of computer technology in the practice of architecture. TAP leaders monitor the development of computer technology and its impact on architecture practice and the entire building life cycle, including design, construction, facility management, and retirement or reuse.

    Hi all,

I'm wondering what software and workflow your firms use going from early conceptual design through construction documentation. Do you do everything within the same BIM platform, or do you use different programs at different stages? What software(s) are you using?

I'm particularly interested in what those of you at mid-size and larger firms do for commercial and institutional projects where there may be different staff involved at different project stages. (Schools, colleges, health care, corporate buildings, etc.)

    Thank you!
    Steve

It varies by project type.  For our K-12 clients, where the pace and product is heavily driven by project budget and timeline, we tend to use Revit from the beginning.  This allows us to instantly compare the design against program requirements and building efficiency.  Schematic models roll right into production at design development and construction document phases. For our Higher Ed and Community projects, where more time and design freedom is afforded, we often start with SketchUp then transition to Revit at some point for documentation.  Both processes are ported through Enscape or Lumion for presentation production.
