Who we are

The Young Architects Forum (YAF), a program of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the College of Fellows (COF), is organized to address issues of particular importance to recently licensed architects.

FAQ: What is a young architect and what is an emerging professional? Young architects are architects licensed up to ten years of initial licensure, and the name does not have any relationship to age. Emerging professionals are professionals who have completed their academic studies up to the point of licensure or up to 10 years after completion of their academic studies. Although young architects are now defined as distinct from emerging professionals, many components refer to these groups similarly. For example, a local YAF group may include emerging professionals and a local Emerging Professionals Committee may include young architects.

    Dear Colleagues,

Literature reviews suggest that a misalignment of priorities between designers and clients, as well as a misunderstanding of the role of the architect has led to the gradual marginalization of the architect on today's design and construction team. To study this phenomenon, a research project will consider this matter from the standpoint of three separate interest groups; the client, the architect, and architectural academic instructors. The beginning stage of this study includes the linked pilot survey, which aims to establish a condensed list of architectural services for consideration in later stages.

This phase of the study seeks to determine and rank the importance of architectural services listed in AIA Documents B101 and B132 as per professional opinion. Because you are a licensed architect who has demonstrated your skills and knowledge of the profession through practice, your insight is key to the success of this study. The questionnaire will also give participants the opportunity to add services they feel should be included on the list of services, and take away services they believe should be removed. Please take a moment to complete this survey. To participate, you must be a registered architect practicing in the United States.

Please know that your participation in this study is voluntary, and participant confidentiality is a top priority with this research team. A decision not to participate will not result in any penalty. You are free to discontinue participation at any time. Within the survey is a consent form for your review. After reading the consent terms, if you choose to participate, please select "I Agree" under the consent statement. Thank you for your time and participation.
