Who We Are

The mission of the AIA Small Firm Exchange (SFx) is to advance the mutual interests of architects practicing in small firms. The objectives of the AIA SFx are three-fold:

1. Advocate the value of small firms, the national SFx, and local SFx groups, both within the AIA and to the public.

2. Curate and disseminate the most pertinent resources and information, from the AIA & elsewhere, that benefit small firms.

3. Inform the AIA of current issues facing small firms and areas in which current resources/information are lacking.

Approximately 75% of all firms within the AIA are small firms (less than 10 employees), which equates to 14,459 small firms within the organization.

~26.8% = sole practitioners = 5,173

~33.5% = 1-5 employees = 6,459

~14.7% = 5-10 employees = 2,827

For context, small firms share of staff is 16.0% and share of billings is 12.0%

We need to find ways to leverage that size for collaboration and influence, just like the individual large firms do.

COVID-19 Resources & Best Practices for Architecture Firms

  • 1.  COVID-19 Resources & Best Practices for Architecture Firms

    Hi All,

A handful of us have been working on developing the following living google doc:

Covid 19 Architecture Firm Best Practices, Communications, and Policies

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jTd3JJdw8HnjYzwApa0q2gAz7DW8v_SGAfPmdnhwkjI/edit

We are working to update this document daily with content that we source from our architecture community - including resource links, best practices, etc...

As far as I know, it is the only resource that is publishing internal communication and temp policies that are being created/sent to firms - but we could use more, especially from XS and S firms.

If you are willing to share any of the communications/policies that have been created by your firm please forward it to evelyn@practiceofarchitecture.com. We are carefully scrubbing all firm identifying information and organizing them into the document by firm size. The only communications where we keep the firm name are those that have been publically sent out on their email listserves.

Please help us continue to grow this resource and let us know where we should be prioritizing our findings.

For those of you that have transitioned to remote work and have best practices to share, please forward those as well.

Thanks again - and hope you are all staying safe and healthy!
