  • 1.  adAPT NYC Pilot Program

    Posted 07-12-2012 02:01 PM
Many of you are probably aware of Mayor Bloomberg's recent announcement of the adAPT NYC Pilot Program, aimed at providing small affordable apartments for young singles living in NYC.  A Call for Entries into the competition to design livable micro-units of a size not permitted by current zoning regulations is included below.  An article from Crain's is also included.

Though this competition focuses on young singles, it offers an interesting precedent for modifying NYC zoning regulations to provide housing for special populations.  Perhaps this approach can be adapted to provide accessible affordable housing for seniors.

Because of its potential for providing livable senior housing, I encourage those of you associated with architectural firms to register and enter the competition to develop some good ideas for making this workable.  A full-scale mock-up of one unit, provocatively designed by the Department of City Planning to encourage improved designs, is outlined on the floor of Tafel Hall at the Center for Architecture.  A pre-submission conference will be held on Tuesday, July 31st, at 2:00pm at the Center.  You'll be able to ask questions, so please attend.

Big Apple bites into tiny apartments: The New York City adAPT NYC pilot program breaks zoning rules and allows units as small as 275 square feet-30% smaller than currently permitted-to meet today's households' down-scaled needs/budgets.
