DESCRIPTION:
The current COVID-19 pandemic exposed pervasive health and welfare inequality in access to healthcare. Underserved communities (healthcare deserts) have predominately uninsured or minimally insured populations including non-English speakers and refugees. Modern history has numerous examples of well-intentioned but hurtful designs imposed on vulnerable populations. This webinar will share processes used to engage a vulnerable, underserved population of Tempe Arizona to create a healthcare facility responsive to its needs and aspirations.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
After participating in this webinar attendees will:
- Be able to discuss factors contributing to health care desertification.
- Compare the presented process for empowered community engagement with traditional design programming.
- Understand the value of vulnerable population ownership of a facility design.
- Learn how you as a privileged architect can work with vulnerable, underserved groups to create healthy communities.
